Circa 1920

The smaller YMCA building on the far left, in Cambridge Terrace, was designed by Thomas Stoddart Lambert and built in 1884. The other, larger YMCA building on the corner was built in 1908-1909, designed by William Paxton Clarkson and Robert Anderson Ballantyne. The old buildings were demolished late 1967 to make way for a new Central Police Station.

YMCA, corner of Cambridge Terrace and Hereford Street

1920

The smaller YMCA building on the far left, in Cambridge Terrace, was designed by Thomas Stoddart Lambert (d. 1915) and built in 1884. The other, larger YMCA building on the corner was built in 1908-1909, designed by William Paxton Clarkson (1863-1917) and Robert Anderson Ballantyne. The YMCA vacated the buildings at the beginning of 1967 and moved to a new site on the corner of Hereford Street and Rolleston Avenue. The old buildings were demolished Sept.- Nov. 1967 to make way for a new central police station.

Laying of the foundation stones of the YMCA building

1908

The foundation stone of the new building on the corner of Hereford Street and Cambridge Terrace, for the Young Men's Christian Association was laid by the Hon. George Fowlds, Minister of Education. Later Mildred Cracroft Wilson laid the foundation stone of the portion of the building (on the first floor) which would be for the Boys' Gordon Hall. Temporary staging for the ceremony was erected on the Hereford Street frontage where the foundation stones were laid. On the platform were the Hon. G. Fowlds, Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson, Bishop Julius , Mr C.E. Salter (President of the YMCA), Mr J. Dryden Hall, Rev. J. Mackenzie, Mr William Reece and Mr P. Hercus. Buildings shown in the background are, from left: the City Council offices, corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester street opened in 1887, the Gas Company and the Clarendon Hotel.
