Emma Jane North and Thomas Samuel Mortlock wedding photograph

23 March 1899

Group portrait at the wedding of Emma Jane North and Samuel Thomas Mortlock.
Contributor's note: "The wedding photo of my maternal grandparents, Emma Jane North and Samuel Thomas Mortlock. They were married at St Marks Church Opawa on 23 March 1899. At the age of 8 months on 19th April 1895 Emma Jane had left Plymouth with her parents and two sisters on The Star of China and arrived at Lyttelton on 1st August 1875. She had a slight roll to her walk and blamed it on learning to walk on the ship. Thomas was secretary for the Addington Timber Company. They had 8 children, Rita, Dorothy, Alma, Tom, George, Ila (Peate - my mother), Jack and Harry. My grandfather Thomas died before I was born but Emma Jane was an amazing grandmother and loved dressing up and knocking on the door to amuse us. She told me one year that her best disguise that year was dressing up as an old lady with bonnet and shawl. She was 90 at the time! She died aged 91. She had 31 grandchildren."
