Add a commentMy Grandfather Oliver Hunter told told me a story about that (or similar). I think they blew up a boat as a sort of Guy Fawkes commemoration. They lived over at Church Bay and he said (sounds far fetched) that after blowing a boat up there was a vortex (they could see a flat spot) and they had been to Lyttleton to buy groceries and the boat went into it. His father (a Shetland sailor turned goldminer ) said "what are you doing Olie" but as the boat turned the wind caught the sails and pushed it out. . He was born 1882.
