River Avon. Fendalton bridge

Circa 1910

The first Fendalton Road bridge over the River Avon on this site was completed before 1860. It was 39 ft. long and 24 ft. 6 in. wide. By 1874 the Provincial Engineer, George Thornton (1829-1914), was expressing concern about its dangerous state. Work on renewing the bridge was done using immigrant labour with a carpenter employed for one day.

Avon pontoon bridge

1937

3rd field Company, Corps of N.Z. Engineers - Southern Command. Having erected a pontoon bridge over the Avon River, everyone either sat, or stood, on it - probably to prove its reliability. My late father NCO Wilfred Malcolm (Mac) Stretch (b. 8.12.1910, d. 1.10.2000) is standing at the left end (back row) with his arms crossed. Heber Edwin (Snowy) Brunsden (in black shirt) is seated 10 from right.
