Circa 1885

In 1882 George Humphreys established Fletcher, Humphreys & Co. at the Cathedral Square end of Chancery Lane. The firm engaged noted architect F.W. Petre and he designed a three-storey building with an Oamaru stone facade which was erected in 1886.

The photograph shows Daresbury, 67 Fendalton Road, a 50-room house on 25 acres, designed by S. Hurst Seager and built between 1897 and 1901 for George Humphreys, co-founder of the wine and spirits merchants Fletcher Humphreys.
