The Son of Man

May 2020

This photo is a recreation of the artwork Son of Man. It reflects Turangawaewae because I like drawing at home and doing stuff like this is important to me. I did it in my backyard in one of my dad's suits.
It is important to me because I feel safe in my home with my family and doing fun things like this.

This image was entered in the Heaton Normal Intermediate School Art Department Lockdown ‘Bubble Photography Competition’. The Theme was - Tūrangawaewae - Our safe place, the place where we feel we belong. Students were asked to photograph things that they and their family had been doing in their bubble that helped them feel safe and gave them a sense of belonging.

Ready for School

circa 1923-24

"Photo taken at the family home on Montreal Street. The tallest girl was born in 1917, the shorter in 1918 and the younger brother in 1924. There girls are in brown pleated school gym frocks, white blouses and brown tie and panama straw hats. They walked to St Joseph's Cathedral School in Barbadoes Street, walking along Moorhouse Avenue. There were no traffic lights, vehicles were horse driven and lots of horse manure dropped on the Avenue. People rode bikes which were expensive." - Contributor's note
