A new engine exhibited by the Addington Workshops

1906

The locomotive was built entirely at the Addington Workshops, and is the largest ever constructed south of the line. It measures sixty feet from end to end, and weighs 72 tons in working trim. The driving wheels are 4ft 6in in diameter, and it has two high pressure cylinders. The engine is built on the De Glehng system, and its tractive power is 19,000 pounds. It has been so placed that it can be thoroughly inspected by visitors.

Sharon Lee locomotive

At Ferrymead Heritage Park. The NZR AB class 663 was named Sharon Lee when it was restored to running condition in 1997. The locomotive is named after Sharon Lee Welch, daughter of Mainline SteamTrust principle Ian Welch. AB 663 Sharon Lee was used as the spare parts source for the Kingston Flyer until purchased by Ian Welch of the Mainline Steam Heritage Trust in 1983. It was returned to service in 1997 with a tender formerly with AB 811 which had been scrapped. It is notable in having its headlight mounted on the front of the smokebox (not the top as was correct) and having been converted to burn oil instead of coal making it the first oil fired pacific. Originally built at the NZR Addington Workshops.

Steam locomotive engine W192 at Weka Pass

5 June 1990

View of the historic steam locomotive engine W192 working its way up Weka Pass. The train is on a 7km journey from Glenmark Station at Waipara to Weka Pass over the Queen's Birthday weekend. The train was built in 1889 at the Addington Railway Workshops and was the first steam locomotive made by the New Zealand Railways.

An electric battery rail-car on the Christchurch to Lyttelton line.

July 1926

The Railway Department's new electric battery car for the Christchurch to Lyttelton line, seen here arriving at the Christchurch station, commenced running last week. Timed through the tunnel with a heavy load of passengers, it took 3min 45sec.
