Christchurch Municipal Baths

The Municipal Baths on Manchester St were the first indoor pools in Christchurch. Opened by the Mayor George Payling on the 14th of May 1908, the city's rubbish furnace helped to heat the pools.

Laying the foundation stone of the Municipal Tepid Baths

The foundation stone was laid by the Mayor, George Payling. The building was erected on part of the Christchurch City Council's yard with the foundation stone facing Manchester Street

Two friends who met at Christchurch West High School off to have a swim at the Tepid Baths in the city. The buildings in the background are the United Service Hotel and the Plaza picture theatre.
