Family car, river crossing

circa 1935

My grandmother, father and uncle owned this car and used it for camping and day trips around Canterbury. On this trip the car had to be taken across a river on a cart pulled by two horses.

Royal Tour, George VI & Queen Elizabeth

circa 1930

The couple are clearly George VI and Queen Elizabeth who toured New Zealand in 1927 as the Duke and Duchess of York. However the car (a Buick) appears later than 1927 and there is no similar car in any other existing photos of the New Zealand tour nor any mounted guards. Overall it appears more likley to be of their tour of Canada in 1939 where similar cars and escort were used.

Jack Ratima and the family's 1926 Buick in the snow at Lewis Pass

1952

Jack Ratima and the family's 1926 Buick in the snow at Lewis Pass. Jack's wife, Dawn, saved pennies to buy this 1926 Buick for the family. In 1952 they did a road trip to the West Coast. Starting from their home in Christchurch, the Ratima family travelled through the Lewis Pass (through snow and fog) to Westport and then further up the coast to Granity. From there they travelled south to Charleston (staying at the Charleston Hotel, and on to Hokitika for a time before returning home. What a great way to travel! The Buick is now buried at the Ruapuna Speedway, along with a number of other significant vehicles from a bygone era.
On reverse of photo:" Lewis Pass - trip from ChCh to Westport then to Granity. Wife, Dawn, saved all her pennies for this Buick, about 1952. Jack said he got trapped in the snow and fog. 1926 Buick.."
