Bank of New Zealand building, Cathedral Square, Christchurch, 1929

1867

This was Exhibit J in a successful action in the Court of Appeal brought by George Gould (1865-1941) and the Save the Square Committee against the Christchurch City Council in 1930. The original BNZ building was a single-storey stone building designed in the classical Palladian style. It was the same site as that occupied today, bounded by Hereford and Colombo Streets and Cathedral Square, and opened Sept. 1866. The main entrance was off Hereford Street. The shop on the right is Whelan's Cheap furnishing

The temporary Bank of New Zealand in Cathedral Square

The temporary home of the Bank of New Zealand in Cathedral Square in the former Christchurch Star building. The building was used temporarily whilst the new BNZ building was being constructed on the south side of Cathedral Square.
