Snow on Oxford Terrace, Christchurch

1862

This view looks south from the Provincial Government Buildings, from the Cambridge Terrace side of the River Avon, and was painted by George Turner (1833?-1911) after a major snowfall in 1862. At the time he was living and working at 41 Sandyford Street, Sydenham. Shown from left as identified by the artist: the home of Dr Alfred Charles Barker (1819-1873); the home of William Guise Brittan (1809 or 10-1876); the Lyttelton Hotel, which was later added to the Clarendon Hotel; Oxford Terrace; Inwood?s mill; the Land Office, Resident Magistrates Court and Registrar of Deeds office; and next, but in the distance is St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church with the residence of Dr Burrell Parkerson (1804?-1878), first surgeon at Christchurch Public Hospital, on its right. The house in the foreground on the left has not been identified.
