The Bridge of Remembrance, Christchurch

Circa 1950

A competition was held for the design of the bridge and a Wellington architectural firm, Prouse and Gummer, was selected as the winner from 24 entries. The construction contract was let to D. Scott and Son for £16,078 and work started on 23 January 1923. The sculptural detail was created by Frederick Gurnsey, a local sculptor, and his assistant, Lawrence Berry. The bridge was opened on Armistice Day, 11 November 1924.

Cashel Street Bridge Of Remembrance From East

6 October 2003

Pedestrian bridge linking Cambridge and Oxford Terrace. The Bridge of Remembrance was opened on Armistice Day, 11 November, 1924 and was dedicated to the memory of those who took part in the 1914-1918 war. At a later date further plaques were added to commemorate the battlefields of World War II.
