Group of standard 4 students in the Rewi Alley library at Wharenui School with Zhang Jun of the Gansu Peoples' Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. Jun is holding a photograph album compiled by the students to send to their sister school in the Gansu province in China, part of the legacy left by former pupil Rewi Alley.

Wharenui School Cadets 1909

Taken in September 1909 just two and a half years after Wharenui School opened, these boys were mostly all Standard Fours. The orginal photo has been lost and in the case of many of the boys shown here it is the only known photo of them. Most of the boys in this photo would go on to serve in the First World War (their names are underlined).
