Women's Land Army plots, Abberley Park, St Albans

1942

Vegetable crops were grown at the experimental section farmed at Abberley Park by members of the Women's Voluntary Land Army during World War Two (1939-1945). A general view of the section is shown. In 1938, after the death of its then owner, John Hobbs Kirk, 4 1/2 acres of the original fifty acres of Abberley, named after Abberley in Worcestershire, England, had been given to the Christchurch City Council for use as a park

Eleanor Upritchard in Ambulance Driver uniform

1939

My mother Eleanor Phyllis Clarkson, nee Upritchard, as a volunteer ambulance driver. She was an excellent driver who got her license in her teens and, according to reports, drove a very sporty American Willys Whippet car. Unfortunately I do not have a photo of the car (or even better the car itself!)
