The Roman Catholic Pro-Cathedral, Barbadoes Street.

1900

The original portion of this church was designed by Benjamin Mountfort , and opened in 1864. It was enlarged in the 1870s. Here it is shown ready to vacate its site in favour of the planned new Cathedral. Three powerful traction engines were used. The dead weight of the partially stripped building was about 250 tons even with its slate roof removed, but it was easily hauled along specially constructed, well-greased wooden tramways. At the time it was the biggest job of its kind ever undertaken in New Zealand. After being given a new iron roof it was opened on its new site by Bishop Moran on 22 July 1900. After the new Cathedral opened, the old building became part of the nearby Roman Catholic school complex

Removal of the Roman Catholic Pro-Cathedral, Christchurch

1900

This was the largest building ever removed in New Zealand. The removal of the Roman Catholic Pro-Cathedral, from its present site, in order to make room for the new cathedral, which it has been decided to build, was a task of no light order. The building, which was 108 ft. by 86 ft. and was a substantially-built structure, weighing 250 tons, had to be removed a distance of 400 ft. On its side it faces Ferry Road. Three large traction engines were used, and the operations were under the direction of Messrs Collins and Harman, architects, the work being done by Mr Swanston, the contractor.

The interior of the Roman Catholic Pro-Cathedral

Circa 1895

The Church of the Blessed Sacrament was a large building on the site of the present Cathedral. The land had been granted by the Canterbury Provincial Council on condition that a building was erected on it. The original portion of the church, designed by Mr B.W. Mountfort, Provincial Architect, and built by Father J.B. Chataigner, had been opened in 1864. During the 1870's it had been enlarged to accommodate a growing Catholic population. It was removed to Ferry Road in 1900.
