Striking slaughtermen outside the Supreme Court, Christchurch. From the 1890s to the 1960s the Arbitration Court decided what wage rates should be. In 1907 the Court listened to the views of employers' representatives rather than to the views of workers' representatives and supported low wage rates, hence the demonstration by slaughtermen

Christchurch City Abattoir, Sockburn, Christchurch

Circa 1900

Most of the stock killed there came from the saleyards at Addington where stock from the South Island and some from the North Island came to be sold every Wednesday at the biggest sale of its kind in New Zealand. Killing was done at the abattoir on behalf of nearly 600 butchers.
