Former Mt Magdala Farm Buildings at Aidanfield

2009

This cluster of farm buildings dates from the 1880s. Possibly designed by the architect F. W. Petrie, the buildings were a rare survival of institutional Victorian buildings. Originally run by the Mt Magdala Community of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd from 1880 - 1966 when the site was taken over by Hospitaller Brothers of St John of God.

Despite attempts to save them by the Historic Places Trust, the Halswell Residents' Associaiton and the Christchurch City Council, developers were given permission to demolish them, subject to a number of condiitons of appropriate recording, and demolition was carried out in Septmber 2009.
