No. 1 Company, leaving their annual camp at Marshland

April 1913

This was the first time that motor cars had been used in military manoeuvres in New Zealand. The No. 1 Company of New Zealand Territorial Engineers were transported to their annual camp in 28 taxicabs supplied by Messrs A.W. Smith and Co. from their garage in Worcester Street. The men arrived at their camping ground ready to undertake any amount of military work at once, with no long march to tire them. The photograph shows the cars drawn up and loaded ready to leave camp for town, the journey of eight miles being accomplished in just over half-an-hour
