Tripods in front of the Absolutely House, Magnetory Observatory

The one on the left is an absolute magnetometer and the smaller instrument on the right is the dip circle. The buildings were constructed with copper nails and brass screws, locks and hinges to be free from foreign magnetic influence

The Magnetory Observatory is sited in the Botanic Gardens, built in 1901. Previously there had been only three such observatories in the Southern Hemisphere

The Botany and Physics buildings and the Observatory
Circa 1919
Canterbury College, University of New Zealand was located in Worcester Street. The Physics building was built in 1917, the Botany extension in 1918, both designed by Collins & Harman. Shown on the right is the Observatory designed by Benjamin Woolfield Mountfort and completed in 1896.
