W. E. Pring, wife Isabell Pring and daughter Leonie

1916

Before W. E. Pring went overseas to the war in 1916 he requested family photos of wife Isabell and daughter Leonie. As the bells rang out on Armistice day in November 1918 he was not to know his little girl had died that day of pneumonia.

World War I Officer

1910s

Unknown soldier; photo reproduced from a glass negative.

Highly commended in the 2014 photo hunt from Glyn Williams.

It has been suggested in a response to a question on the New Zealand genealogy list New Zealand L, that "the cap badge is most likely British. The flying dragon emblem was used by Brecknockshire Battalion soldiers in WW1. It may also be the "Buffs" Royal Kent East Regiment which is a British Regiment that existed from 1572 to 1961 and has used the same flying Dragon Motif."

Military Parade - Akaroa - 9 January 1919

9 January 1919

View of the military parade organised to welcome the French Mission to New Zealand on their visit to Akaroa  9-10 January 1919 as it enters Akaroa township. This was the only military parade for the  mission during their three week visit and was mounted because of Akaroa's early French settlement. The photo shows a brass band, local returned soldiers, Red Cross and Lady Liverpool workers with the rest of the parade stretching into the distance. Local school children were dressed as the French flag and sang the Marsellaise in French and local Maori also sang the Marsellaise and provided a poi demonstration. The mission was welcomed enthusiastically and made several stops along the route from Christchurch to Akaroa.
