Settlers' V huts at Riccarton

These huts were erected by Charles Bowen, father of the Hon. Charles Christopher Bowen, and were the first in the district They were located at Milford, rural section Number Ninety-four on Fendall Town Road, owned by Charles Bowen.

This was the replica V-hut made for the reality tv show Colonial House. The series was set in 1852 and followed the Te Huttons family who spent 10 weeks living as if they were a recently emigrated family to New Zealand. It was filmed in paddocks near Ferrymead and transported after the end of filming to Ferrymead Heritage Park. It is now used for educational purposes to give children an experience of 1850's New Zealand. V-huts were distinctive to the Canterbury settlement and were put up as temporary accommodation for new settlers. The buildings consisted of a thatched roof with door and windows at one end. They appear not to have had chimneys, suggesting cooking was done outside.
