Mairehau Hall

1916

The name Mairehau was chosen in honour of Miss Mairehau Rhodes, the daughter of Mr and Mrs A E G Rhodes. The area came under the jurisdiction of the Waimairi County Council who approved the name Mairehau and agreed to lend the North Avon Road Board building to the residents for use as the Mairehau Public Hall. The building was extended before being handed over. The hall was opened in a ceremony by Mrs S A Staples (wife of the Chairman of the Waiamairi Council) on Thursday 14 December 1916. In attendance were J A Flesher (Mayor of New Brighton), Waimairi County Councillors, Mr and Mrs A E G Rhodes and Joseph R. Walter (in front row centre in dark suit, hands on knees). He was well known in the district, a market gardener and farmer and taught the local bible school.
