Mr A. Paynter's attractive garden, 49 Idris Rd, Fendalton

1930

This house, Greystones, was designed in the 1920s by Hugh Hamilton, a director of the building firm Paynter & Hamilton, for his business partner and brother-in-law, Albert Paynter. In 1930 the garden was the winner of the New Zealand Institute of Architects' prize for Taste and Design in the Christchurch Home Gardens Competition

A delightful little garden at 66 Ruskin Street, Addington

1930

This garden belonging to Mr H.C. Thrower won first prize in 1930 in Class A (the under 1/4 of an acre class) of the Christchurch Home Gardens competition. The judges felt that "it would be almost impossible to conceive a garden kept in a more perfect condition

Parkdale, 16 Heaton Street, Strowan

1932

This house, designed by American architect Delamore, was built for William Crompton who claimed to be the first manufacturer of galvanised iron in New Zealand. The garden of nearly one acre was designed by Alfred Buxton. In 1932 it was the winning B garden in the Home Gardens competition run by the Canterbury Horticultural Society
