Cathedral Square, south corner from Cathedral tower
Circa 1881
This scene pre-dates 1884 when Morten's Buildings took over the site at the left. The small stone Torlesse building in the centre, designed by M. Bury and built in 1874, survived until 1916 when it was replaced by the Strand theatre. In the corner of the Square is the New Zealand Insurance Co. building built ca. 1870, while dominating the right is the then new Government Buildings (later the Chief Post Office), built in 1879 to a design by W.H. Clayton.
