Syd Carter, barber and tobacconist in his shop

1959-60

My dad (Syd Carter) working in his barber and tobacconist shop in the early 1960s (I think). St. Martins. He was a great one for a laugh and a good 'yarn' and enjoyed the interaction with his customers. I can still smell the 'Bay Rum' and see the stacks of 'Picture Posts' and 'Weekly News', as well Donald Duck and Superman comics to amuse the youngest customers.

Syd Carter, barber and tobacconist in his shop

1965-66

My dad Syd Carter had a barber and tobacconist shop on the corner of Wilsons Road and Gamblins Road in St Martins. He was popular with the teenagers of the day as he was always willing to try something different. The older customers still wanted the 'short back and sides' but the younger oneds wanted flat tops, mohawks, and DAs.
