The completed cathedral viewed from the Post Office tower

Circa 1904

In 1858 plans were commissioned from the pre-eminent English Gothic architect of the day, George Gilbert Scott, who never visited the city but left oversight to Robert Speechley, the superintending architect. The foundation stone was laid in 1864. Foundations of the Cathedral were completed in 1865 but, because of economic conditions, no further work was done until 1873 when Benjamin Mountfort became resident architect. He adapted the Scott design and added features of his own, such as the tower balconies, west porch, font, pulpit and stained glass. In 1881 the nave was completed and consecrated, but there was not enough money for the transepts, chancel and sanctuary. Those took another twenty-three years to construct. The western porch was added in 1894-1895. In November 1904 the Cathedral was finally completed, at a cost of £64,000.

Interior of the Cathedral shown while under construction

1879

By August 1876 construction of the Cathedral was well underway. However, the funds of the Cathedral Commission were so limited that for two years (1878-1879) it was not possible to let any contract, the work being done by day labour.. Progress is shown in this photograph.

Cathedral, Cathedral Square

Circa 1888

The Cathedral was designed by the Englishman G.G. Scott and work began on it in 1863. A local architect, B.W. Mountfort, later supervised the project. This image belongs to the period 1882-1888. The tower and spire, paid for by the Rhodes family, are complete. The spire was later damaged in the earthquake of 1888 which brought down part of the top section. The nave, which was roofed in 1881, is also completed. The transepts and chancel areas at the back were not finished until 1904.
