"Costume Cricket Match" held in Hagley Park
"Costume Cricket Match" held in Hagley Park
This photo, from a family album, I believe depicts some participants in a "Costume Cricket Match" held in Hagley Park on 23 Oct 1877 to raise money for the Indian Famine. Those in the photo are dressed in costumes which came from the Gaiety Theatre where my G Grandfather, "Ned Rose" was employed. See Paperspast Lyttelton Times 24 Oct 1877 search: famine relief fund for an account of the day. Descriptions of the costumes could identify some of those in the photo. The building behind I think may be what is now known as the Umpires Pavilion beside the Cricket ground in Hagley Park. The image quality is not that good but I do hope it can be uploaded to the discovery wall as it is rather unique.
