Boy with a dog
"This boy attended Christchurch East School, Gloucester Street, Christchurch. This was during the Depression. He was an only child and both his parent's worked so could afford to buy school uniforms and shoes and spectacles. Many children had neither because NZ was poor during the Depression, and many had no lunch at school. He lived at 212 Montreal Street. The dog's name was Pat. He passed his Proficiency certificate after Standard 6 which enabled him to go to High School. he attended Technical College. After 2 years at High School you had to pass your Senior Free to go onto Form V. He wanted to go to University but his parents told him to get a trade. He became a shoe clicker. Today robots cut patterns for shoes." - Contributor's note
