"Photo taken by my father Peter Basire ( a photographer) from his collection. The ship Caronia berthing at Lyttelton. It berthed at 7.00am. This photo shows the tug alongside. It departed again at 2.00am on the 28 February 1954" - Contributor's note

Add a comment"Caronia," 1948, 34183 GRT ( Gross Registered Tons ) liner and cruise ship. Owned by the Cunard Line. Painted in several shades of light green with the Cunard red and black funnel.Known as the Green Goddess. Sold, she was eventually to end her days as the "Caribia" when she broke her tow on the way to the breakers and ran aground at Apia Harbour, Guam, in August 1974.
