Hannah Christina Ford

21 January 1888

"Hannah Christina Ford sometimes called Honora, on her wedding day to James Huston. Hannah emigrated from Galway, Ireland with her brother Thomas. She sailed on the ship Westland. The ship was named after the Westcoast and made 25 voyages to NZ. Hannah was 86 days at sea, sailing from London, 21 Nov 1879 and arrived in Lyttelton on 21 February 1880. She was an assisted emigrant which meant the Government subsidised her passage. Hannah was not quite 16 and was listed as a General Servant. Ireland was very poor and thousands of Irish died during the Potato famine. This was the reason thousands emigrated to New Zealand." - Contributor's note
