Walter Harkess
Walter Harkess
"Walter Harkess lived at 77 Reserve Terrace. He was a local carrier in Lyttelton. The horse's name was Jack. Walter loved the races and Hilda (His wife) enjoyed the annual ride in the gig to the Motukarara Races. At the end of World War II when the Lyttelton men returned Walter loaned them his horse and cart (not the gig) to drive around Lyttelton to celebrate their return at the local pubs. Jack the horse had an accident and had to be put down. He is buried on the slopes of Reserve Terrace." - Contributor's note
