Grave of Sultan and Sali Mahomet

21 October 2020

The grave of Sultan Mahomet, Sali Mahomet, and Florence Wylie in Linwood Cemetery.

"Sultan Mahomet was born c. 1836. A Muslim, his place of birth has been listed as both Arabia and Dera (possibly Dera Ismail Khan in what was then the Sikh Empire). His own father's name was Razzak. Sali Mahomet was the son of Sultan and born c. 1866. He possibly spent his childhood in the region now known as the country, Turkmenistan. Although he once listed his country of origin as Ceylon, he also claimed to be Punjabi. Sultan and Sali arrived in New Zealand c. 1894 and worked as hawkers. Sali eventually settled in Christchurch. Sultan died, while visiting his son, in 1905. In the following year, Sali married Florence Johnstone. Sali later sold ice cream in Cathedral Square, and became known as Ice Cream Charlie. He died in 1943 in Ashburton and was buried with in his father's grave in Linwood Cemetery. His daughter, Florence Wylie, who died in 1998, was also interred with him." - Contributor's note
