Plaque for Indian settlers at Old Stone House
Plaque for Indian settlers at Old Stone House
"This plaque was installed for the reopening of Old Stone House on 7 February 2018. The plaque commemorates the workers from the Indian subcontinent who arrived in Canterbury with John Cracroft Wilson between 1854 and 1859. These workers formed the earliest community of Indians in Christchurch and many later lived in the stone house Cracroft Wilson built. The plaque uses the term "Eurasians" which was a historical term for Anglo-Indians. Anglo-Indians are a community that originated in the Indian subcontinent who are the descendants of a European father and an Indian mother." -Contributor's note
