Whale Swim to New Brighton Pier
Whale Swim to New Brighton Pier
Video of two Southern Right Whales, cow with her calf swam to New Brighton Pier on Sunday 8th August 2021.
People gathered along the beaches, North Shore to Taylor's Mistake, hoping to see whales that were in Pegasus Bay (Aug 6-12th). The sea was calm, but not Thurs 12th when the two whales were not easily seen. Whale watchers saw them from Clifton Hill outlook.
From Sun to Wed with calm sea in New Brighton, the cow lead her calf routinely up and down the bay. On the pier, excited whale watchers and media waited for them to arrive.
Breathing pattern bond, after diving for 10 minutes the cow 'spouted/mini-dive/spouted' for 2-3 times before 'floating/mini-dive/floating'. Then 1 or 2 'mini-dive/spouted and back to the longer dive with the calf, when it possibly nursed. The calf breathing was diving/spouting quite often, swimming near mother.
According to science, the whales come closer to shore for these reasons, the calmer sea allows them a time for rest, communication may be close whispering to the sound of the waves protecting their location from orcas and male Southern Right whales.
