Floral carpet
Floral carpet
Floral carpet. Contributor’s note:
This was one of the main exhibits in the Botanic Gardens for the visit by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on February 17, 1963.
Approximately 20,000 blooms, mostly chrysanthemums and dahlias and 8000 grey leaves were used.
Planning of the design involved laying out builder’s paper (50ft by 30ft) at Cowles Stadium. The City Council’s reserves department staff drew the geometrical pattern which formed the basis of the carpet.
Flowers were sourced from the City Council’s own supply, however public assistance was sought for more blooms.
