Ferrymead Cantilever Bridge

1960

Ferrymead Bridge was the original site for European settlers to cross the Heathcote river using a ferry service established in 1850 and travel up a path (now Ferry Road) to the settlement of Christchurch. The Ferry service was replaced by a swing bridge in 1864, allowing boats to pass through and berth at Ferrymead. The swing bridge was replaced by a cantilever bridge in 1907 which did not close properly so remained closed as in the photo. This bridge was replaced in 1965.
