Dinner at the Malando restaurant
Dinner at the Malando restaurant
Contributor’s note: “This photo was taken C. 1969 at "The Malando" restaurant, the first licenced restaurant to open in Christchurch in 1952. My parents Gordon and Libby Ogilvie ( back) Jane and Anthony Taylor ( front) are being hosted by German friends Adolf and Helga Stadtländer during a Christchurch visit. Adolf, a fruit exporter, was a lover of fine wines, so he would have asked which restaurant in Christchurch was licenced to serve wine and this would have been the recommendation. Around the era of the space race, the unusual interplanatary wall murels would have been very avante garde. There was also a dance floor and live music with the Doug Caldwell trio, known as the Jazz man or "Maestro" at the time. This photo is a rare photo of The Malando restaurant and indicative of the emerging dining scene in Christchurch at the time. "The Malando" at its origional site at 813 Colombo Street, was owned by several proprietors including Hans Levy, and eventually in 1991 became the popular "Valentinos" until the Christchurch earthquakes forced Valentinos to move to St Asaph Street and the building was demolished”.
