Speech Competitions
Speech Competitions
When a friend, Nicholas Matson, and I entered the Christchurch Speech Competitions at 8 for the first time I felt petrified when I arrived. We had "elocution lessons' in those days and I was on Aunt Haysl's radio show reciting "Porridge'. Nicky and I are dressed, not as 8yr olds today. He had a suit with tie, shiny shoes and long socks. I had plenty of ribbons, shiny lace up shoes as well, a worsted woollen coat (fawn) and brown woollen gloves. It was usual for boys/men to stand this way and for girls/ladies to stand more together, esp. Legs
