Mr I. Estcourt, leader of the scientific party from the Oceanographic Institute of the Dominion Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington. Mr Estcourt is pictured on board the H.M.N.Z.S. Endeavour at Lyttelton Harbour inspecting an "orange peel" grab and a beam trawl in preparation for undertaking oceanographic surveys of the Campbell Plateau, a continental shelf 300 miles south of New Zealand.
