Add a commentThis vehicle is a 1924 Tilling-Stevens Petrol-Electric 28m Fire Escape, commissioned new by the Christchurch Fire Board in November, 1924. It served in Christchurch until it was sold February, 1963. It attended and was used as a water tower at Ballantyne's fire in November, 1947. The controversy surrounding its involvement in the tragedy was that it was not turned out with the initial response and when it did arrive it was not used for rescue purposes. The comments below by Paul Corliss have the wrong year of arrival, the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board was not formed until 1958, and it was not a back-up appliance at Ballantyne's.
It's actually a 1922 Tilling-Stevens with its 90 foot wooden ladder, operated by the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board and was a back up during the tragic Ballantyne's fire of 1947. It is currently domiciled at the Ferrymead Heritage Park where it is on long-term loan by it restorer and current owner Warner Mauger.
