The new Christmas bike

30 December 1976

Man teaching a girl to ride a bicycle in the driveway of a house.
Contributor's note: "My older brother teaching our niece to ride the new bike she got for Christmas. Typical scene of family life where someone has to run behind the bike & hold it up until the niece gets the hang of it. My parents' roughcast house, split concrete drive with strip of lawn down the middle, folding wooden doors on garage with painted hinges as a feature. Painted concrete steps. My brother in "short shorts" showing a grand tan! My niece in a Holly Hobby tee shirt."

Highly commended: 2013 Christchurch City Libraries Photo Hunt.

Judge's comment: "The images give us a real sense of how the family lived their life. It was interesting to see what events were chosen as important moments, holidays, snow, learning to ride a bike, the simple pleasures of sharing a meal or a BBQ and family interactions in their lounge."
