Plaque on the corner of High and Cashel Streets, Christchurch
Plaque on the corner of High and Cashel Streets, Christchurch
The photo was taken on the corner of High and Cashel Streets on my daughter's 10th birthday. I used to work in central Christchurch before the earthquake and must have walked in this precise spot thousands of times during my lunchbreaks, always looking up, or sideways, but never under my feet. In 2013, once the debris from the destroyed buildings had been cleared, there was literally nothing to look at when standing there. This is how I discovered this plaque, marking the very spot where our city began. I have recently visited the spot again. The shops have re-opened, workers have returned, it is once again bustling with people. Too busy and too rushed to look under their feet. But I know the plaque is there and make sure I stop for just a moment to reflect.
