Old St Barnabas Church, Fendalton

November 1918

This wooden building was built in 1876. During the influenza edpidemic, in Nov. 1918, the main porch was used as a chancel for out-of-door services. At the time Canon Thomas Albert Hamilton was the vicar.

Laying of the foundation stone of St Barnabas Church, Fendalton

22 March 1925

The ceremony, on 22 Mar. 1925, was performed by Archbishop Julius and over 800 people attended. The church was a memorial to those who died in the Great War 1914-1918 and was designed by architect Cecil Wood. Planning had been underway for a stone church to replace the original wooden building since 1884. The nave of the original wooden church stood in front of the tower of the present church

Members of the North Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society attending the annual church parade outside St Barnabas Church in Fendalton. The parade takes places in locations all over the world to commemorate the birth of the founder of the Red Cross, Henri Dunan.
