Sumner beach from Clifton Spur

Circa 1895

Cave Rock and the Sumner pier are shown on the left. On the right is Mrs Rule's Hotel. Mary Ann Rule, nee Day bought the land and built the hotel in 1875. It was called Mrs Rule's Boarding House until she obtained a licence and it was then known as Mrs Rule's Hotel. Also on the right is the house belonging to Edwin Coxhead Mouldey, known as the Beach House. In the foreground is the white steam tram bridge built in 1887.

Tram lines along Sumner Road

Circa 1890

A boy stands by the tram lines along the Sumner road past the Clifton Spur and Shag Rock. The Canterbury Company opened a line to Heathcote Bridge on 9 December 1882 and an extension to Sumner on 1 November 1888. Steam trams were used on the line.
