A policeman using bolt cutters to remove the chains linking four Springbok rugby tour protesters, who had chained themselves to the first-floor level scaffolding outside the Canterbury Rugby Union offices on Manchester Street.

11 July 1981

Police in a scuffle with an anti-springbok tour demonstrator outside the venue, Wilding Park, of the Davis Cup tennis match between Great Britain and New Zealand. The incident happened as the Prime Minister, Mr Robert Muldoon, entered the stadium.
