"Peter Harkess of Lyttelton. The British Petroleum Company's base was in Lyttelton (B.P). Before the Lyttelton Road Tunnel opened the BP trucks had to take the city fuel supplies over the Sumner Road. This driver recalls his brakes giving out on the Sumner side of the hill and had to guide the truck downhill with no brakes. When the truck stopped he had to go to the nearest house in Heathcote and ring Lyttelton for assistance. Many of these drivers were very skillful as there were no automatic gears in those days. B.P. looked after their staff and drivers were often presented with a Safety Driving Record for the hundreds of miles they drive to deliver fuel all over Canterbury including farms." - Contributor's note
