Life without (any) drainage - Avonside, Residential Red Zone
Living in the depths of Avonside's Residential Red Zone for eight months, we found various ways of adjusting to life with mains water but WITHOUT any working drainage. (Stormwater, greywater & sewage were partially functional after 2010 quake but all completely munted by Feb 2011 shake - landlord still charged the same rent though!!)
I ran a drainage pipe from my washing machine to outside barrel, then emptied wastewater into buckets & disposed to garden. Labour-intensive but at least made it still possible to have clean clothes for work! (Showering occurred quickly while standing in large basin, which would then also be emptied outside). Note previous garden area, completely sterilised by thick layer of liquefaction silt. (Photo location: 58A Keller Street, Avonside).
