Not just portaloos!

17 October 2011

In the months following the 2011 earthquakes, sewage & drainage were entirely non-functional in most of the Residental Red Zone, so residents were provided with a number of.... alternative options! Most visitors will have seen the ubiquitous portaloos on each block, but may not have also noticed the roadside "green mushrooms". These were large tanks into which residents could empty their small chemical toilets, which had been provided by the Council. (Trips out to the portaloo weren't always practical, especially during spring flooding & when navigating badly-damaged driveways in the dark of night!)
Note also temporary road repairs to maintain resident access (left), and replacement water pipes which had to be laid to houses along the river (right), where the worst damage to underground supply lines occurred. Location of photo: Avonside Drive.
