Briar Cook behind the counter at Scalasi
Briar Cook behind the counter at Scalasi
I worked at Scalasi for about 10 months from 1990-1991. I got a job there because when I saw the kitchen being over-run I got up and cleared some tables and did some dishes. Scalasi was an amazing place for artists and musicians to gather, every week there were films and live performances. Unfortunately the pay was terrible - the hours were long - and when they started selling alcohol to cover ever piling up expenses it would fill up with drunken idiots when the bars closed at 10pm. I got sick but could not quit because I hadn't been able to save and there were harsh penalties if a person left their job. I was pretty happy when it closed down - even as Christchurch lost a real treasure.
