Sunbathers on Akaroa waterfront

December 1959

Akaroa waterfront, sandy beach. December 1959, during my house party at Hawkin's Bach. 9 happy young people from Christchurch, enjoying the Canterbury summer sun. On sand from left - Ian Willetts (partly obscured), Jill Edwards, Dawn Forde, Jan Begg, then 3 sitting on a deck - Colleen Hoult, John Whitehead and Geoff Dowland. Forefront, on sand - Howard Lowe and Ken McClelland. We had never heard of melanoma in 1959!

I was 11 back in 1959 & played on that slide regularly. Mum & Dad had Garthowen as a bach & we were there many weekends of the year. Akaroa could be mistaken for HEAVEN in the 50s & 60s. New Years eve dance in the boatsheds upstairs, (at the ramp just past the big wharf) bonfires on the beach near that slide & cooking 'snorkers' on sticks. Once a year we would unite with other familys & net for a few flounders at Children's Bay. Mum sadly passed in '59, leaving us kids (further on in life) with magnificent memories.
